Range Road South Asphalt Extension under construction

We are extending the multi-use pathway along Range Road to Two Mile Hill!

The purpose of this project is increase active transportation connectivity between the Two Mile Hill and the Airport Trail multi-use pathways.

Background

In 2018, the Yukon Government completed the Range Road extension as a part of the Alaska Highway safety improvements through Whitehorse. This project included the extension of Range Road and a multi-use pathway connection from the Airport Trail to the limits of construction of the project. This project seeks to complete the connection between the Airport Trail and Two Mile Hill by extending the multi-use pathway along Range Road. The proposed upgrades include the following:

  • Drainage.
  • Excavation.
  • Landscaping
  • Multi-use pathway.
  • Pavement markings and signage.
  • Pedestrian crossings.
  • Retaining walls.
  • Surface works: asphalt, concrete.
  • Utility relocation.

The proposed upgrades will improve transportation accessibility, connectivity, equity, mobility, safety, and sustainability by:

  • Accessible pedestrian infrastructure to improve transportation mobility for people with disabilities.
  • Connection to both the Alaska Highway & Two Mile Hill/Hamilton Boulevard and Range Road & Two Mile Hill Road intersections.
  • Culverts and optimized grading to minimize pooling along the path and improve drainage.
  • Enhanced geometry and layout to minimize road safety conflicts between active transportation users and drivers.
  • Improved pedestrian crossings.
  • Improved vehicular sightlines.
  • Narrowed driveways at Canada Post to minimize active transportation crossing distances and exposure.
  • New pavement markings and signage for multi-use pathways.
  • Separation from both Range Road and the Alaska Highway to maximize safety and comfort of active transportation users.
  • Paved connections to major destinations along the corridor such as the Whitehorse Public Safety Building and the Whitehorse Operations Building.
  • Transit integration with the multi-use pathway.

Hi, What's going on with the path and the general area now? Has contamination been found? What's the new timeline for completion of the path? Thank you.

    jennifercdagg asked 5 months ago

    Hi jennifercdagg,

Range Road is being excavated for installation of a new sanitary lift station. The lift station is an essential piece of infrastructure for the City and needed to be constructed during this construction season.

We are aiming for completion of the path by October 31, 2022.

    Cheers,

What is the updated timeline for this project? The end date on the website currently says July 31, which was more than a month ago. Thanks!

    Bryn asked 7 months ago

    Hi Byrn,

    Thank you for flagging this.

Due to current economic conditions and availability of asphalt paving crews, project completion has been delayed to approximately mid September. We are looking to finish grading and paving next week and the whole project soon.

Please keep posted to this page for updates.

I know it's not within the scope of this project, but please consider getting rid of the road crossing by the Dairy Queen. This is hazardous due to the crossing and the sharp corners and a hassle. It would be better if the path went directly towards the lights where a safe crossing could be made either across Range Rd to continue along the path to the airport or the Alaska towards Valleyview.

    Ghislain asked 10 months ago

    Hi Ghislain,

Thank you for the question and suggestion.

You are right in that this section of Range Road Asphalt Path is not within the scope of work for this project. This section was built by the Yukon Government in 2018 as part of the Alaska Highway safety improvements through Whitehorse.

We are currently in the process of updating our Transportation Master Plan. This plan will identify all the transportation improvements that we will engage in over the short, medium, and long term horizons. I encourage you to keep posted to this project for future public engagements opportunities to provide input on how you think the City should develop its transportation network in the future. This is the best avenue for you to provide input on rerouting the Asphalt Path towards the lights.

Can you Please hurry up!! I bike this route everyday with my two young children and would love to get off Range rd asap! Especially with the increased traffic due to the closure of Robert service.

Pave the trail asked 10 months ago

    Hi Pave the trail,

We are working with our contractor to finalize timing of construction start and completion. We will let residents know once we know.

Can the path be re-routed so that it doesn't cross Range Rd near DQ, then cross the DQ parking lot? It wasn't great before DQ was built, but now with the traffic and lines for the drive-through it's particularly dangerous.

    northernlife asked 10 months ago

    Hi northernlife,

    Thank you for the question.

The scope of this project only includes the path north of where is currently terminates. The southern portion of the pathway was built as part of the Range Road Extension carried out by the Yukon Government  - Department of Highways and Public Works.

Why don't you move this entire project closer to the river so people can bike downtown from Whistlebend?

    darren asked 11 months ago

    Hi darren,

Thanks for the idea. This project focuses specifically on the Range Road corridor between Two Mile Hill Road and the Alaska Highway.

The City can consider a cycling connection between Downtown and Whistle Bend as a future potential project. I encourage you to submit your idea (and any other ideas) for our coming capital and operating budget. Please see the following link Capital and Operating Budget | Engage Whitehorse to submit your idea.

Will this asphalt path be open to motorized vehicles such as ATVs and/or snowmobiles?

ReptileCreek 22 asked 11 months ago

    Hi ReptileCreek 22,

This multi-use pathway will be classified as non-motorized, similar to the Airport Trail.
