Landfill Emissions
When solid waste is landfilled, its organic components (e.g. paper, food and yard waste, etc.) decompose over time in an anaerobic (oxygen-poor) environment, generating methane and carbon dioxide emissions. Landfill emissions are unique in that the disposed solid waste generates emissions over many years. This chart does not include emissions from equipment used for collecting or landfilling.
