We're implementing a series of traffic calming measures throughout Whitehorse to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance the street environment for non-motorists. Locations are adjacent to schools, playgrounds, and other areas with vulnerable road users.
Traffic calming measures and changing driver behaviour is most successful through approaches that include installation of physical infrastructure, education, and enforcement. We'll continue to work with the appropriate partners to educate and enforce safer driving habits.

The 2023 locations were identified by analyzing areas of concern brought to the City’s attention from residents. Speed and traffic data was collected and used to validate those concerns, and help identify the best calming measure for each location.
A capital project business case for 2024 is currently being developed for consideration to continue the program in other locations throughout Whitehorse.
Copper Ridge
North Star Drive - Copper Ridge Park
A set of four speed cushions will be installed on the roadway. These thick rubber mats will span the roadway and be pinned into the asphalt. The gaps will allow emergency equipment and transit buses to move relatively unimpeded, but will encourage standard road users to meet the 30km/h speed limit.
Granger
Thompson Road and Bowen Place
A pedestrian refuge will be placed to both narrow the road and calm traffic for this crossing that is part of an active transportation connection to a school.
Mary Lake
Fireweed Drive - Gilles Lapres Memorial Park
Transverse lines, in addition to painted speed limits on the roadway, will be added to alert drivers to the 30 km/h zone present in place for the Gilles Lapres Memorial Park. Literature suggests this can reduce the 85th percentile by 8 km/hr.
McIntyre
Murphy Road
A speed hump will be installed at the entrance and exit of Murphy Road to reduce cut-through while the upcoming McIntyre capital project is underway.
Porter Creek
Holly Street and 13th Avenue
Currently, a well used path connects Porter Creek Secondary School to Holly Street. A speed hump will be installed north of the intersection with 13th Avenue, to calm traffic entering the curve where pedestrians tend to cross the road.
Pine Street and Ponderosa Drive - Prune/Ponderosa Recreational Park
A pedestrian refuge will be placed to both narrow the road, calm traffic, and improve visibility of pedestrian crossing signage to enhance compliance of vehicles yielding to pedestrians.
Takhini
Normandy Road and Falaise Road
Temporary curbs, reducing the radius of Normandy and Falaise, will be placed to reduce speeds coming into the neighbourhood park.
Whistle Bend
Skookum Drive
Two speed humps will be installed near the intersection of Skookum Drive and Chakawana Lane, and the active transportation asphalt path crossing.
Whitehorse Copper
Moraine Drive
A 50 km/h marking will be painted on the road along Moraine Drive to alert drivers of the neighbourhood’s speed limit.
